The organisers of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, Nilayo Sports Management, have vowed to make the event’s 10th anniversary a grand celebration of athleticism, unity, and global excellence, set to take place on February 15.
The marathon, which first began in 2016, now enters its 10th year with a prestigious World Athletics gold label. Jackson Tuwei, Vice President of World Athletics, mentioned last year that the event might be upgraded to a platinum label after a thorough review of this year’s edition.
The organisers are expecting a record participation, with more than 4,000 international runners and 100 elite athletes confirmed for the 2025 race. “The Access Bank Lagos City Marathon’s 10th anniversary marks a milestone where this event has become much more than a sporting competition,” said Yetunde Olopade, CEO of Nilayo Sports Management. “It is a movement that encourages health, fosters international camaraderie, and elevates Lagos on the global athletics map,” she added.
Olopade also emphasized that this milestone edition will feature a more welcoming and inclusive race experience, setting a new benchmark for road races and reinforcing its status as one of the fastest-growing global marathon events. Athletes from leading long-distance running nations such as Kenya and Ethiopia, along with participants from countries like France, will converge on Lagos to compete for victory.
Kenyan runner Bernard Sang, who won the 2024 edition, has expressed his intention to defend his title and secure another victory at the 2025 race after his breakthrough success last year.
