The Lagos State Government has commenced the removal of illegal structures under the Apongbon Bridge and along the Savage/Elegbata/Bombata drainage channel on Lagos Island. This enforcement follows the expiration of a 48-hour quit notice issued to occupants last week.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, stated that the operation is part of efforts to mitigate flooding and restore environmental order. He emphasized that the obstructions caused by these illegal structures hinder the proper flow of water through drainage channels, increasing the risk of floods.

“We issued the abatement notices in accordance with the law, and today we are here to ensure compliance,” Wahab said. He added that while illegal extensions and structures within drainage alignments will be removed, buildings not obstructing the channels will remain untouched.

The commissioner warned against the return of traders and squatters to cleared areas, noting past instances of non-compliance. He also criticized contractors who dump building materials in drainage systems, exacerbating environmental challenges.

The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to maintaining urban infrastructure and enforcing environmental laws. This initiative is part of broader efforts to promote safety, hygiene, and sustainable development in Lagos, Africa’s most populous megacity.

The removal exercise underscores the government’s determination to prevent the proliferation of slums and ensure that public spaces are used responsibly. Residents have been urged to support these efforts by adhering to environmental regulations.
