The Federal Fire Service has disclosed that fire outbreaks in Nigeria claimed the lives of 100 individuals and caused property damage amounting to N67.1 billion in 2024. However, the agency also highlighted its success in preventing even greater damage, with nearly 31,000 lives saved and property worth an impressive N1.94 trillion safeguarded.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, the Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Abdulganiyu Jaji, provided these sobering statistics, emphasizing the agency’s efforts to mitigate disaster across the country.
“In 2024, our service managed to save property valued at N1.94 trillion while we unfortunately saw a property loss of N67.1 billion,” Jaji said. “Additionally, we were able to rescue 30,890 lives, though we deeply regret the loss of 23 lives during these incidents. Our thoughts are with the bereaved families.”
He pointed to negligence and failure to adhere to safety protocols as significant contributors to the fire outbreaks, stressing that heightened caution was essential, particularly during the harmattan season, when the risk of fires is at its peak.
Jaji urged the public to remain vigilant, particularly those operating fuel stations, gas refill plants, and individuals using gas cylinders. “During harmattan, low humidity increases the likelihood of static sparks or gas explosions. It is crucial for everyone – from fuel station operators to ordinary consumers – to follow all safety guidelines to avoid potentially catastrophic incidents,” he cautioned.
Looking ahead, Jaji reaffirmed the Federal Fire Service’s commitment to improving fire safety and response times in 2025. The agency plans to enhance its operations by integrating advanced technologies like the National Fire Detection and Alarm System and the N-Alert Fire Alarm App, which will improve public awareness and response coordination.
“As we move into 2025, our mission remains to safeguard lives, property, and the environment,” Jaji concluded. “We will continue to prioritize public safety, invest in cutting-edge technology, and remain steadfast in fulfilling our duties.”
