A bomb allegedly planted by suspected bandits detonated in Bassa community, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, claiming the life of one child and leaving four others critically injured. The children, who were reportedly playing near the device, were severely affected by the blast.
Reports indicate that the deceased child has been laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites, while the injured children are undergoing treatment at the IBB Specialist Hospital in Minna.
The incident occurred on Thursday when the children came across the bomb and began playing with it, unaware of its danger. The explosion resulted in the instant death of one child, while the others suffered severe injuries.
According to a local source, the victims were on their way to the farm when the tragic explosion occurred. Ahmed Almustapha, a resident of the community and relative of the victims, stated that three of the injured children, who lost their legs in the explosion, are siblings and his sister’s children.
“This is the second explosion in Bassa this month,” Almustapha revealed. “Two weeks ago, another blast killed a farmer on his way to the farm.” He urged the Niger State and federal governments to provide immediate assistance to the community to ensure safety and support for farming activities.
When contacted, Wasiu Abiodun, the spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, said he would provide confirmation regarding the incident.
The residents of Bassa continue to call for government intervention, expressing fear and concern over the recurring explosions in the area.
