In collaboration with UNESCO, the Nigerian Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP) Committee has launched a two-day workshop to enhance Water Resource Management for Food Security and Sustainable Livelihoods in Nigeria.
The event convened high-profile dignitaries, including the Hon. Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Terlumun Utsev, UNESCO Abuja Office Head, Mr. Abdourahamane Diallo, NIHSA Director General, Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, and the National IHP Committee Chairman, Prof. O.D. Jimoh. Other key stakeholders and researchers also contributed to the forum.
The workshop’s key objectives include strengthening stakeholders’ capacity in water management, advancing strategies for food security, and inaugurating the UNESCO Chair in Integrated Flood Management and Water Resources.
This initiative highlights the importance of sustainable water resource practices in addressing Nigeria’s food security challenges while fostering collaboration among national and international partners.
In his welcome remark, Mr. Diallo noted that the workshop will provide a platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and networking among diverse stakeholders on water resources management with a focus on food security and sustainable livelihoods.
In an interview with Landslide news correspondent, the Director General Umar Mohammed noted that a group of experienced institutional leaders has been put together to come up with intellectual and innovative programmes and research to address the basic needs and challenges of water resources in the country.
He added that these programmes will facilitate in bridging the gap and proferring solutions to enhance the water management skills and also boost the food security and production in the country.
The Hon. Minister Joseph Utsev who gave the opening address noted that the “UNESCO Chair serves as a platform designed to promote research/training that would help in building, interpreting and disseminating the base knowledge in water and enviroment sectors.”
The Minister highlighted that the Chair is also expected to assist in developing a multi-hazard flood response strategy and promote evidence of UNESCO’s activities in the country.
He further extended his gratitude to “UNESCO for continuous support towards advancing knowledge in water science for promoting the activities of Integrated River Basin Management.”
The event commenced today 4th Dec. 2024 and will run through 5th Dec. at the Reiz Continental Hotel, Abuja.
