Troost-Ekong: Musa Still Super Eagles Captain, Always Welcome Back

Stand-in Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has reaffirmed that Ahmed Musa remains the team’s captain and is always welcome back.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Friday’s 2025 AFCON qualifier against Libya at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, the 31-year-old Al-Kholood defender emphasized Musa’s leadership qualities. “He’s still our captain and is welcome back anytime. He’s our most capped player, a great role model, and a strong leader. I’m happy to deputize for him,” said the Netherlands-born player, who is expected to lead the Super Eagles defense.

Musa, Nigeria’s most-capped player with 109 appearances, is widely respected for his humility and leadership. Since his debut in 2010, he has contributed 16 goals for the Super Eagles and made history as the first Nigerian to score more than one goal in a FIFA World Cup match, netting twice against Argentina in 2014. He also became the first Nigerian to score in two World Cup tournaments, with a memorable brace against Iceland in 2018.

After a turbulent spell in his club career, which saw his contract with Sivasspor end in September 2022, Musa returned to Kano Pillars this month for the remainder of the 2024/25 NPFL season. He made an immediate impact, scoring two goals in a 2-0 victory over Sunshine Stars in his third stint with his boyhood club.

“I’m thrilled to be back in the NPFL and contributing to my team’s success. It feels special playing here, and I hope to keep making our supporters proud,” Musa said after the match.

Although his last Super Eagles appearance was as an unused substitute during the 2023 AFCON final loss to Côte d’Ivoire, his recent form with Kano Pillars suggests it won’t be long before he returns to the national team.
