The Lagos State Government has raised concerns about a potential building collapse at the Mopol 20 Barracks in Onigbongbo, located in the Ikeja area.
In response, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) is preparing for an emergency evacuation and demolition of the old Block 3 of the barracks.
In a statement released on Wednesday, LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, mentioned that an assessment of the structure revealed it to be in a dangerous state.
He noted that both the building and nearby structures would be evacuated immediately to avoid any loss of life or property.
“The agency sent a response team to the site, and the findings indicate that evacuation of the building and surrounding areas is necessary right away. We are implementing a response plan that includes assessment, safe evacuation, and controlled demolition,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
He emphasized that under the leadership of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, this proactive demolition is essential due to the building’s unstable condition and the risk of further incidents if not addressed.
Oke-Osanyintolu also urged residents in the area to stay calm and avoid sharing misinformation on social media, assuring them that the situation is being closely monitored and managed.
