Boat accident in Zamfara State, Gummi Local Government Area, which occurred on Sunday, resulted in the death of at least 40 lives.
The incident occurred when a boat carrying over 40 passengers capsized in the Bakin Kasuwa River of Uban Dawaki community.
This incident occurred after a recent flood disaster in the same Local Government Area, which destroyed over 2,000 houses and several farmlands.
The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and publicity, Suleiman Idris, confirmed the tragedy and the governor directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to conduct immediate rescue and recovery operations.
He said, “We received the tragic report of a boat accident in BakinKasuwa River in Uban Dawaki ward, Gummi Local GovernmentArea, resulting in the loss of over 40 lives.
“The governor has directed the State Emergency Management Agency(SEMA) to embark on immediate rescue and recovery of the dead bodies.
In addition, Sulaiman Idris, revealed that the governor described the incident as a monumental disaster and has also directed the commissioner for Humanitarian and Relief Matters to provide immediate relief materials to the victims’ families.
Governor Lawal expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and assured the state government’s commitment to preventing similar incidents from occurring in the future.
