Nigerian comedian Anita Asuoha, widely recognized as Real Warri Pikin, recently opened up about her attempted suicide due to a debt of N22 million.
In a post shared on her Instagram page on Wednesday, she revealed that during a period of financial difficulty, her husband was encouraged by a motivational speaker to venture into multiple business endeavors.
Following the speaker’s advice, her husband embarked on several business pursuits in a bid to improve their financial situation, but unfortunately, these efforts resulted in accumulating a debt of N22 million.
Sharing her story to mark World Suicide Prevention Day, Asuoha recalled how, after repeated failures, she tried to take her own life in June 2018.
She recounted the event, stating, “I tried to take my life so others wouldn’t have to go through the same. On June 6, 2018, at exactly 3 pm, I attempted suicide. The pressure was unbearable. Life was hitting me from all sides, and it felt like I was stuck, spinning like a barber’s chair. I thought ending my life would be the only way to stop the pain,” she said in a video posted on Instagram.
Asuoha attributed the prevention of her suicide attempt to a family member who arrived at just the right moment and intervened, ultimately saving her life.
While acknowledging that life can be overwhelming, she urged her followers not to see suicide as an escape, reminding them that life has its seasons and challenges. She emphasized, “Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Above all, hold on to your faith and do what is within your power,” she advised.
In a previous interview in 2019, Asuoha shared how comedy became her outlet after battling depression. She reflected, “I found my talent in comedy through my struggles with depression. Back in school, I was into professional dancing, hosting events, and doing stand-up comedy, but I never pursued it seriously. Last year, when I was deep in depression and facing financial challenges, I thought, ‘Why not make funny videos to inspire and motivate others?’ And that’s how I got to where I am today.”
