NBA Urges President Tinubu to Reverse Fuel Price

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately reverse the recent fuel price increase, stating its devastating impact on the already struggling citizens.

In a statement released on Wednesday by the NBA President, Afam Osigwe emphasized that the timing of the price hike is improper, given the widespread economic hardship faced by citizens due to government policies.

He said, “The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) expresses its profound concern and strong condemnation over the recent increase in the pump price of fuel by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), which has risen sharply from 617 Naira to about 900 Naira.

“This significant and abrupt hike has imposed an unbearable burden on the already overstretched finances of ordinary Nigerians, further aggravating the economic challenges faced by millions across the country.

“The cascading effects of such a steep increase in fuel prices on the cost of living, transportation, and essential goods and services are deeply troubling. Many Nigerians are already grappling with inflation, unemployment, and other forms of hardship, and this additional financial strain is simply unsustainable. If allowed to persist, this price hike will only deepen the poverty and hardship experienced by the citizens.”

Osigwe expressed concerns that the fuel price increase will result in a high level of poverty, unemployment, and inflation, ultimately deepening the economic challenges faced by millions of Nigerians. He acknowledged the need for economic reforms but stressed that such decisions must prioritize citizen’s welfare.

The NBA has urged the government to engage in dialogue with stakeholders to explore alternative solutions that balance economic stability with the protection of citizens interests.
