Newcastle United has confirmed that Sandro Tonali will be eligible to join the squad for the new season starting on August 28, 2024, according to a report from Fabrizio Romano’s X account on Thursday.
The club received official word from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) that Tonali’s suspension extends through August 27, meaning he can return to the field starting August 28. However, the exact timing of his return remains uncertain, as Newcastle has a Carabao Cup second-round match against Nottingham Forest that week. The match could take place on either Tuesday or Wednesday evening. If the game is scheduled for Tuesday, Tonali would not be allowed to play, but he would be eligible if the match is set for Wednesday.
Tonali’s first Premier League appearance is likely to be against Tottenham Hotspur at St James’ Park on September 1. It’s worth noting that Tonali has been banned from competitive football since October 2023, though he has continued training with Newcastle’s first team. He will sit out Newcastle’s first two Premier League games against Southampton and AFC Bournemouth but is expected to be available for the match against Spurs.
