On Sunday, Nigeria’s women’s basketball team made history by becoming the first African team, male or female, to advance to the quarter-finals of an Olympic basketball tournament. This milestone was achieved following a 79-70 victory over Canada at the Pierre-Mauroy Stadium near Lille.
This triumph ensures that Nigeria will finish among the top three in Group B, while Canada exits the tournament without securing a single win. The Nigerians dominated the third quarter, outscoring Canada 23-5. Ezinne Kalu, born in the United States, led the scoring with 21 points, and Elizabeth Balogun contributed 14 points.
The draw for the women’s quarter-finals is set to take place later on Sunday, with the quarter-final games scheduled for Wednesday. The knockout stages for both the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments will be held in Paris.
