A blaze that erupted early Thursday morning destroyed property worth millions of naira, affecting three shops at the Ladipo Baale Roundabout Plank Market in Orile-Iganmu, Lagos. Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, confirmed that there were no fatalities in the incident.
The fire broke out around midnight, impacting a portion of the plank market. According to Dr. Oke-Osanyitolu, preliminary investigations suggest that the fire originated from a pile of planks due to a power surge, which then rapidly spread to three other shops in the market.
“No casualties or injuries were reported in the incident. Responders were able to salvage a significant amount of planks and properties, also valued at millions of naira, during the operation,” he stated. “The swift actions of the responders managed to contain the fire before it could extend to additional shops.”
The agency’s Response Team, along with members of the Plank Market Association, conducted a public awareness campaign on preventive measures to avoid such incidents in the future. The LASEMA Response Team, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Nigerian Police Force were all involved in the emergency response.
