The ongoing nationwide protest against economic hardship in Nigeria has turned violent in Kano when protesters set a bonfire in front of the Government House, causing the security agents to fire gunshots and teargas.
The protesters had gathered to demand action from Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, when a group of demonstrators lit tyres on fire, creating a bonfire that heightened tensions.
The security operatives responded with force, dispersing the crowd and causing chaos in the area.
According to some eyewitnesses,the atmosphere had been calm until the bonfire incident, but the situation quickly escalated. Additional security measures have been put in place, with armed police, military personnel, and other operatives deployed to maintain order.
The protests, tagged #EndBadGovernance, is part of a nationwide demonstration against economic hardship and insecurity.
