The House of Representatives, during a recent plenary session chaired by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, announced their commitment to addressing nationwide hunger by voluntarily forfeiting 50% of their salaries for a period of six months.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, advocating for this measure, emphasised the need for collective support among colleagues, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by the country despite government efforts.

“This government’s initiatives are commendable, yet the nation’s challenges require sustained efforts beyond a single year,” he urged, appealing for solidarity in making the sacrifice for the specified duration.

Kalu proposed, “Our monthly salary is N600,000. I propose that we forfeit 50% of our salary for six months.”

If each member contributes N300,000 monthly, the legislative chamber will collectively contribute N108 million monthly to the Federal Government, totaling N648 million over six months.
