In the early hours of today July 2, 2024, a four-storey building adjacent to the Westbrook Hotel in the Garki area of FCT, Abuja collapsed, trapping several people under the debris.
In a video circulating social media, it could be seen of pillars and welding irons scattered on the ground.
According to an anonymous eyewitness who informed the Punch of the tragic situation, there could be a “possibility” of casualties as he saw two trapped persons being rescued from the rubble and rushed to the hospital.
“There is a possibility that there could be some people inside the collapsed building who may have died. I saw two people being pulled out from the rubble now and taken to the hospital while rescue operations were ongoing. The emergency responders are not coordinated yet for efficient operations,” he said.
However, a current report revealed that emergency crews have responded to the building collapse as the authorities in charge have rescued two people, although there could be others still trapped under the debris.
As of the time of reporting, the cause of the building collapse is yet to be known.
According to Punch, the Westbrook Hotel is said to be owned by a former governor of a state in South East.
