The Labour Party (LP) candidate in the 2023 presidential election, Peter Obi has called the attention of the federal government to release Nnamdi Kanu
Peter Obi made this appeal on Saturday, June 29 while speaking to Journalists in Anambra State.
According to him, it is important to respect court decisions and the rule of law, urging the government to release those granted bail.
He said, “I see no justification for his continued detention, particularly since the courts have granted him bail. The government must respect the court’s decision,” Obi stated.
“Rule of law is a fundamental asset that we must uphold and live by. I take this opportunity to appeal to the government to ensure that all individuals in similar situations are released and engaged in dialogue.
“We are in a democracy, and we should avoid actions that are arbitrary and outside the law.”
The ex-governor of Anambra state also called on southeastern governors to unite and tackle regional insecurity and economic challenges.
He said, “The first primary work of government is the security of lives and property. It is the foundation on which people can live in any nation because no one can stay in an insecure place.”
“It is worrisome what is happening in Nigeria with the news of killings, abductions, and other vices that have made Nigeria one of the most insecure places on the earth. It is leading to a failed nation.
“I commend the government for their efforts so far, but there is a need to do more, and all leaders must come together to join hands and fight this. In the South-east, there is a need for the governors to come together to be able to tackle it.
“Even in economic agenda, I want to see the South-east governors work more closely. We want to see them come together and also bring together other groups in the zone.”
Reports from The Guardian stated that Peter Obi also called for the release of other freedom fighters and #EndSARS protesters still in detention, expressing concern over the high level of insecurity in the country.
