NFF Part Ways with Super Eagles Coach.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has decided to part ways with Finidi George as the Super Eagles coach and is set to bring in a foreign technical adviser following the team’s disappointing performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

In a statement issued after an executive committee meeting on Wednesday, June 12, the NFF expressed regret to Nigerian fans for the team’s poor results, accumulating only three points out of a possible 12 in the initial four qualifiers.

The federation announced its intention to hire an expatriate Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers kick off in September. This significant decision marks the conclusion of Finidi’s short tenure, which has been marred by subpar outcomes and criticism regarding squad choices.

Despite hopes that the AFCON 1994 champion could rejuvenate the team, his time in charge has swiftly unraveled, leaving Nigeria with a challenging path to qualify for the 2026 World Cup after recent defeats to Benin and a draw with South Africa.

Although the NFF’s statement did not explicitly address Finidi’s future, indications suggest a probable demotion as they pursue a prominent foreign coach.

The NFF’s choice to seek foreign expertise mirrors past strategies aimed at revitalizing the Super Eagles’ performance. Currently positioned fifth in their World Cup qualifying group, the new technical adviser will face the daunting task of orchestrating a remarkable turnaround in the remaining 2025 qualifiers. Securing qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations is a top priority to avoid further setbacks.

Additionally, the NFF revealed plans to restructure the technical department and launch an extensive scouting program to identify players worldwide eligible for Nigerian citizenship. The effectiveness of these comprehensive changes in sparking the necessary revival remains to be seen.
