The Lagos State Government released its transportation policy on Tuesday, emphasizing the need to integrate different modes and components of transportation to enable smooth mobility.
The policy document was launched by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who stated that it would take care of the transportation needs of those living in Lagos State.
Speaking through his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Sanwo-Olu stated that inclusivity, sustainability, and innovation were the cornerstones of the state’s transportation policy.
According to Sanwo-Olu, the policy demonstrated the state government’s dedication to offering all citizens safe, dependable, and reasonably priced transportation options regardless of location or socioeconomic position.
“I am sure we all know the challenges that have plagued our transportation system for too long,” he said.
The governor listed a number of difficulties, including poor infrastructure, pollution, and heavy traffic.
“However, challenges present opportunities for innovation and transformation. It is with this mindset that we have approached the task of crafting a comprehensive transport policy that addresses the needs of all Lagosians,” he said.
He praised a group of professionals, decision-makers, transportation providers, and other interested parties and individuals who dedicated their time, knowledge, and ideas to assembling the policy paper.
According to the governor, the government has made significant and commendable progress in the transportation sector.
Among the accomplishments he mentioned were the renovation and extension of certain road networks. He noted that there are continuous attempts to guarantee improved traffic efficiency and to extend and renovate more routes.
“A notable example is the ongoing construction of the Opebi-Ojota Link Bridge, a landmark project set to reduce travel time and enhance accessibility throughout Ikeja and its surroundings,” he said.
Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, had earlier stated during his welcome speech that transportation was the foundation of any flourishing city.
He claimed that the transportation policy would assist in addressing transportation-related issues and provide the groundwork for a better and more prosperous future.
“The Lagos State Transport Policy represents a bold step forward in our collective efforts to transform the way we move people and goods within our city.
“Crafted through extensive consultation with stakeholders, experts and other citizens, this policy embodies our commitment to innovation, efficiency and inclusivity in all aspects of transportation planning and management.
“The policy provides a comprehensive framework for continued development and regulation of our transportation system,” he said.
