A tragic incident has occurred at Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, where a final-year student, Favour Ugwuka, took her own life in her hostel on Wednesday night. Reports indicate that Ugwuka, an English Department student, had passed all her courses but repeatedly failed one particular course, whose lecturer allegedly vowed she would never pass.

The deceased’s mother and a graduate of the institution, Rex Nwome, have blamed the lecturer for her death, citing his alleged vow and the student’s subsequent depression. The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the incident, and efforts are being made to investigate the circumstances surrounding Ugwuka’s suicide.

This tragic event highlights the pressing issues of academic pressure, depression, and the need for support systems in Nigerian universities. The university community and authorities are urged to take immediate action to address these concerns and ensure a safe and supportive environment for all students. May Favour Ugwuka’s soul rest in peace.
