Following an open-fighting battle that ensued on Saturday between traders and some soldiers in Banex Plaza, Wuse 2, Abuja, the plaza was shut down, today making it the fifth day of shutdown.
Military personnel have been deployed to keep watch at the popular phone market, however, tragedy strikes as one of the military personnel slaps a woman into a coma on Tuesday at the plaza.
According to Punch correspondent, it was gathered that the lady who fell into a coma was harmlessly trekking on the barricaded road when she was stopped by soldiers. The lady was accosted for crossing a barricade mounted at the entrance of the plaza.
After she was asked several questions, one of the soldiers slapped her heavily, and she collapsed. Fortunately, she was quickly taken into a van which sped off the scene. It was however unclear if she was taken to the hospital for medical attention.
According to traders who have been counting their losses over the military action, the issue could have been resolved without the shutdown of the plaza.
It could be recalled that on Saturday, trouble ensued at the plaza after a trader sold a bad phone to someone who invited soldiers. The police tried to resolve the matter but was futile. This resulted to soldiers storming the plaza and forcing traders to shut down immediately.
Viral videos on social media showed soldiers pursuing a crowd of people and punishing a few others.
According to the army spokesperson, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu stated on Tuesday that the plaza has been temporarily closed in order to capture and identify the perpetrators of this act.
