Oba Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin, has expressed happiness over the return of two artifacts on Saturday from the German government, which was facilitated by Olugbile Holloway, Director General of the National Commission for Museum and Monument.
Glowing, Oba Ewuare II thanked Holloway for the surprise, stating, “I am truly appreciative of this gesture, even though I am not sure what you have done.” To further express his gratitude to Holloway, the Oba gave the DG a sizable piece of white chalk. On Saturday, the German government gave two artifacts back to the Oba of Benin’s palace.
Holloway carried the artifacts, as well as the metal and wooden stools, into the palace. The Federal Government had owned the artifacts since 2022; on Saturday, they were given to the Oba.
After taking office, Holloway claimed to be at the palace to greet the Oba and informed him that he was also there to present the monarch with a surprise.
The Oba was astonished when Holloway opened the box and revealed the two stools, and he began to dance with the other subjects in the palace.
Holloway said, “I have come to the palace to introduce myself and my team to the Oba and to let the Oba know that we are ready to work with the kingdom.
“Apart from this, I also have a surprise for the Oba and hopefully this will be the beginning of better things to come,” he added.
