ASUU Threatens to Go on Nationwide Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which is an association of lecturers in Nigerian universities, have threatened to embark on a nationwide strike.

It has been reported by ASUU that the move to embark on strike is to protest against the failure of the Nigerian government to appoint Governing Councils for federal universities among some other issues that the government is yet to approve.

ASUU recalled that the Federal Government who dissolved governing councils of the universities in May (2023) has asked Nigerians to hold the government accountable for any decision it takes to protest on the actions of government.

The president of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, spoke at a conference which took place in Abuja at the ASUU national secretariat.

At the briefing , the ASUU president complained about the absence of governing councils in all federal universities in the country among other issues that are yet to be resolved.
The union also complained about the 35 per cent salary increment for professors and the 25 per cent salary increment for other university academics, describing it as a wage award that could be suspended by the government at any time.

The president of ASUU , Prof.Emmanuel Osodeke, stated that this current administration has been given enough time to meet the demands of the union but is yet to do so thereby leading them to consider the move to embark on a natiowide strike.
