Tragedy struck the Nigerian film industry, Nollywood, as the news broke on Wednesday, April 10, of the untimely demise of 39-year-old actor, Junior Pope. Reports indicated that the talented actor drowned while attempting to cross the River Niger during the filming of a movie.
Alongside three fellow actors, Junior Pope found himself in a perilous situation when their boat capsized in the Anam River. As at the time the news broke out of the boat capsizing , it was reported that when his body was found he was unconscious, however when he was taken to the hospital they were able to resuscitate him.
unfortunately, earlier that day it was announced that he died. Filmmaker Samuel Olatunji shared the heartbreaking news, revealing that the bodies of the four actors, had been recovered from the river. It was a somber day for Nollywood, as the industry mourned the loss of these talented individuals.
Pope Obumneme Odonwodo, popularly known as Junior Pope, is a multi-talented figure in Nollywood, serving as an actor, model, and philanthropist. Born on May 7, 1984, in Bamenda, Cameroon, to Mr. and Mrs. Luke Odonwodo, he hails from the Ukehe tribe of Enugu State in southeastern Nigeria. Despite his Cameroonian upbringing, Junior Pope completed his primary and secondary education in Cameroon before relocating to Nigeria.
After graduating from college, he pursued higher education at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he earned a degree in Accountancy. In 2006, Junior Pope ventured into acting in Nollywood and quickly gained recognition, particularly for his roles as guards and servants. His breakthrough came in 2007 with the blockbuster movie “Secret Adventures,” directed by Tchidi Chikere, which propelled him to fame.
Throughout his career, Junior Pope has appeared in over 100 movies, including notable titles such as “Mad Sex,” “Bitter Generation,” and “Vengeance of Bullet.” In 2010, he received the Nollywood Most Promising Actor award at the Entertainment Factory Awards.
In July 2014, Junior Pope tied the knot with Jennifer Awele Okpuno, with whom he shares three beautiful children. His talent and dedication have earned him various accolades, including recognition as one of Nigeria’s wealthiest and most influential actors, with an estimated net worth of $350,000.
