The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested popular Nigerian cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, AKA Bobrisky, for violation of the Nigerian currency (Naira)
The arrest was confirmed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) spokesman, Dele Oyewale who said Bobrisky was arrested at Pinnock Estate in Lagos State on Wednesday, April 3, 2024. He was arrested for alleged spraying of the Naira, currency mutilation, and abuse of the Naira.
According to Dele Oyewale, “Bobrisky is with us. He was arrested last night in Lagos and is at our Lagos command. We arrested him for alleged abuse of naira notes, spraying of naira notes, and currency mutilation, among others”.
He said “We are very serious about restoring the dignity of the naira. Though our investigation is still ongoing, he will be charged to court soon.”
Following the recent events, Bobrisky has been entangled in several controversies lately. Winning the ‘Best Dressed Female’ award at a movie premiere on 25th March 2024 was one major event that caused a buzz on social media.
Due to the social outrage, Force Spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi, said “There is no provision in the law suggesting that crossdressers in Nigeria should be arrested’. He also said “I have not read anywhere that cross-dressing is an offense in Nigeria,” on Channels Television’s Politics Today program. “Let us be reasonable, you cannot arrest somebody you want to prosecute without having credible evidence and as such, crossdressing is not yet a crime in Nigeria.
Muyiwa Adejobi further said “Some of them that are into cross-dressing, the allegation is that they are into something else, that’s where the problem lies. We need enough proof that they are actually into ‘that’. All those offenses are natural in Nigeria and punishable under our laws. “
