Super Eagles defender Bruno Onyemaechi has made the switch from Portuguese side Boavista to Olympiacos FC, the 47-time champions of Greece. The Greek club confirmed his signing through an announcement on their official website on Monday.
“The 25-year-old joins us from Portuguese outfit Boavista, where he featured in 77 matches, scored five goals, and registered three assists,” the statement revealed.
“This season, he has appeared in 18 games, contributing three goals and one assist.”
In total, Onyemaechi played 77 games for Boavista across three seasons, netting five goals and delivering three assists. His performances this season have been particularly impressive, showcasing his versatility as both a wing-back and an advanced midfielder.
As reported by local media, Onyemaechi inked a four-year contract with the reigning 2024 Europa Conference League winners in a deal valued at €2.5 million. Olympiacos secured his services after an intense competition with Benfica and Fenerbahce for the defender.
Onyemaechi joined Boavista in 2023 after a stint at Fereinse and a loan spell with Vila Real in Portugal.
Born in Owerri, the Nigerian international made his debut for the Super Eagles during their 6-0 victory over Sao Tome and Principe in 2023. He has since become a key part of the national team, earning 11 international caps. Onyemaechi also represented Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, where the Super Eagles finished as runners-up. He served as the backup left-back to Zaidu Sanusi.
Boavista will reportedly retain a percentage of any future transfer fees, reflecting their confidence in Onyemaechi’s potential to secure an even bigger move in the future.
The move to Olympiacos presents an exciting opportunity for the defender to elevate his career, offering him a platform to compete at a higher level while continuing his growth on the European stage. His addition is expected to strengthen the Greek club’s squad as they aim for success in domestic and European competitions this season.
