Cricket: Nigeria Set to play England, Ireland in W’Cup Super 6

Nigeria’s U-19 women’s cricket team, known as the Junior Female Yellow Greens, has advanced to the Super 6 phase of the 2025 ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup taking place in Malaysia.

They are set to compete against England and Ireland, according to reports from PUNCH Sports Extra. Although the Junior Female Yellow Greens faced a 41-run defeat against South Africa on Wednesday, the historic victory by two runs over New Zealand earlier in the week, along with a shared points match against Samoa, secured their place as the second-best team in Group C.

In their recent encounter with South Africa, which marked the second clash between the two teams in the past year, captain Piety Lucky won the toss and opted to have the formidable African team bat first. South Africa started strong, with Simone Lourens hitting four boundaries, but her innings was cut short by Nigeria’s captain in the seventh over, just before rain interrupted the match and reduced it to eight overs.

When play resumed, Lucky continued her impressive bowling, taking the wicket of Kayla Reyneke as South Africa concluded their innings at 49 for 2. Nigeria’s batting response was tense, and the pressure led to a disappointing score of just 24 for 8. Despite the loss, the Junior Female Yellow Greens remain focused on achieving history as they prepare to face England on January 25 and Ireland on January 29.

England and Ireland finished first and third respectively in Group B, and the Nigerian team will need to gather all the points and runs possible in the upcoming matches to strengthen their chances of reaching the semi-finals.
