Confed Cup: Enyimba’s Hopes Shattered by Zamalek Defeat

Zamalek ended Enyimba’s journey in the CAF Confederation Cup with a commanding 3-1 triumph during their final Group A clash at the Cairo International Stadium on Sunday, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

The Egyptian powerhouses, who had already secured the group’s top position with 11 points prior to the game, were too formidable for the Nigerian champions. Enyimba entered the match needing a win to keep their knockout stage hopes alive.

Mostafa Shalaby opened the scoring for the home side in the 29th minute with a precise header, while Seifeddine Jaziri extended Zamalek’s lead shortly after the break. Enyimba reignited their chances when Ifeanyi Ihemekwele netted in the 57th minute. However, Jaziri’s second goal, just three minutes from full-time, dashed any hopes of a late comeback for the People’s Elephant.

In the other Group A fixture, Al Masry confirmed their advancement with an emphatic 3-1 victory over Black Bulls Maputo. Fakhreddine Ben Youssef stole the show with a brilliant first-half hat-trick.

As a result, Enyimba finished outside the qualifying spots, bringing their Confederation Cup run to an early end. Despite their rich history in continental competitions, which includes two CAF Champions League titles, this campaign adds to their struggles in achieving success in the Confederation Cup.

Now eliminated, the eight-time NPFL champions will shift their focus to domestic football. They resume their Nigeria Premier Football League season on January 23 with a key match against former league winners Kano Pillars.

Although Enyimba’s continental campaign ended in disappointment, the Aba-based side will aim to use this setback as motivation in their quest for a ninth NPFL title when league action resumes later this month.
