The death of Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, has been confirmed. The announcement was made by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, on Wednesday. According to the statement, Lagbaja passed away on Tuesday night in Lagos after a period of illness. He was 56 years old.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed his sorrow over Lagbaja’s passing, offering heartfelt condolences to his family and the Nigerian Armed Forces. He praised the late General for his exceptional service and leadership, which significantly contributed to national security. Lagbaja had served as Chief of Army Staff since June 19, 2023, when he was appointed by President Tinubu.

Throughout his distinguished military career, Lagbaja was known for his key role in several important operations, including *Operation ZAKI* in Benue State, *Lafiya Dole* in Borno, *Udoka* in the Southeast, and *Operation Forest Sanity* in Kaduna and Niger States. He was also an alumnus of the prestigious U.S. Army War College and had previously served as a platoon commander in the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion.

Lagbaja is survived by his wife, Mariya, and their two children.

Following his illness and temporary absence, President Tinubu appointed Major General Olufemi Oluyede as acting Chief of Army Staff. Last Wednesday, President Tinubu promoted Oluyede to the rank of Lieutenant General, recognizing his dedicated service to Nigeria’s military and the stability of the nation.

This marks a significant moment of loss for the country, as Nigeria mourns the passing of a respected military leader while transitioning to new leadership in the Army.
