The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Abia State Chapter reports that Abia is the only state in Nigeria implementing such a tax. The government led by Alex Otti has introduced a tax on churches for their signposts in Abia State.
The SaharaReporters has learned that the tax has sparked significant controversy in the state, with many religious leaders opposing it.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Abia State Chapter has stated that Abia is the only state in Nigeria imposing such a tax.
In a letter obtained by Sahara Reporters, signed by state CAN Chairman Rev. Ojo Ojo Uduma and Secretary Rev. Dr. Francis E. Okere, the organization expressed concern that Christians in the state might view the “regime as anti-church” due to this policy.
It urged Governor Otti to reconsider the issue and potentially revoke the decision.
“We earnestly appeal to your Excellency to urgently review this matter and possibly rescind this policy to prevent the Body of Christ in the state from perceiving this regime as anti-church,” the letter stated.
The CAN leadership also proposed a roundtable discussion with the state’s Christian leaders to seek an amicable resolution to the issue.
