The man’s body was discovered by the side of the road, and the Niger State Police Command is investigating to find out why he died.

The man, only known as Buba, was discovered dead by the side of the road near the BCGA Bridge on Kontagora-Zuru Road in Kontagora LGA, Niger State. It is thought that he was a beggar.

Rumor has it that the 70-year-old man may have starved to death.

Kontagora locals claimed that the man was from Bangi, the state’s Magama LGA headquarters and that he had been spotted pleading for alms at various intersections.

The beggar was discovered unconscious when the police arrived, according to Wasiu Abiodun, the Niger Police Public Relations Officer, who confirmed the death on Thursday.

“On August 14, 2024, at about 0830hrs, based on a report at A Div Kgora, that one beggar, aged about 70, whose identity is yet to be known, was found lying unconscious at Kwanar-Zuru bridge in Kgora.

“The police operatives attached to A Div Kgora visited the scene. The body was examined, and no sign of violence was seen on the body. The LGA social welfare officials were contacted, and the body was removed to the general hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

“Further examination of the body is ongoing at the hospital to ascertain the cause of the death,” Abiodun said.

The beggar’s body was placed in the mortuary of Kontagora General Hospital in anticipation of burial.
