Tahir Ahmed, 62, has been taken into custody by Bauchi Police Command agents for counterfeiting naira notes.

Ahmed Wakil, the command’s police public relations officer, revealed in a press release on Tuesday.

“A concerned citizen from Jos North LGA, Plateau State boarded a commercial Vectra vehicle from Sabon Garin Narabi Toro LGA, Bauchi State, en route to Bauchi,” he wrote on August 6, 2024.

Tahir Ahmed, 62, got out of the car and joined the journey to Bauchi when they arrived at Tilden Fulani Market in Toro Local Government Area, Bauchi State.

”While in transit, Ahmed allegedly transformed some papers into new one thousand naira notes through what appeared to be ritualistic chanting, giving rise to suspicion that the notes might be counterfeit.”

According to him, a good samaritan reported to the police station after arriving in Bauchi metropolitan area via Yandoka Road.

According to Wakil, the suspect allegedly confessed to the crime following a series of interrogations, and two hundred and thirty-eight thousand naira—suggested to be counterfeit notes—were found on him.

The PPRO further said, ”Investigations are ongoing to uncover further details related to this incident stating that the command police commissioner, Auwal Muhammad has instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department,  to send a request letter to the Central Bank of Nigeria for forensic analysis to determine the authenticity of the suspected currency notes.”
