The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has issued a directive that no international flight operations should be conducted through non-international airports.
This move is aimed at preventing VIPs from smuggling things such as cash, goods, arms, and possibly human beings into Nigeria.
Some sources revealed that many of the VIPs have been requesting for last-minute landings at local airports to avoid scrutiny from immigration and customs services. The minister’s directive is a response to this trend and it is expected to be enforced immediately.
The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has also issued a circular regarding the directive.
The circular states that all international flight operations at general aviation terminals (GAT) and other private terminals at international airports must ensure that they complete their clearances/checks at international terminals, except for those exempted by the National Security Adviser (NSA).
Compliance with the directive is compulsory, and any violation will attract appropriate sanctions. The move is seen as a step towards enhancing security and preventing illegal activities in the country’s airports.
