The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has urged Nigerians to reject ethnic and religious divisions and support leadership capable of uniting the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi made the call during an NDC Global Digital Town Hall held virtually on Sunday, where he spoke with Nigerians at home and abroad on voter mobilisation, election security and the need to protect the electoral process.
The former Anambra State governor said Nigeria could not achieve meaningful development while citizens remained divided along ethnic, religious and regional lines.
According to him, the challenges facing Nigerians affect everyone, regardless of their tribe or religion, making national unity essential to addressing the country’s problems.
Obi noted that Nigerians do not enjoy cheaper food, fuel or better security based on their ethnic or religious identities, arguing that poverty and insecurity remain widespread across the country.
He therefore called for the election of a president who would unite Nigerians, strengthen national security and provide effective leadership.
Obi also urged voters to take an active role in protecting their votes during the 2027 election. He advised citizens to remain at their polling units until votes are counted and results properly recorded.
He further appealed to his supporters and other Nigerians committed to credible elections to mobilise voters and ensure adequate polling agents are deployed across the country.
The NDC candidate warned against vote-buying, intimidation and the use of ethnic or religious sentiments to influence voters, saying such practices could undermine the country’s future.
On insecurity, Obi called for better equipment, logistics and welfare for security personnel, stressing that the agencies responsible for protecting Nigerians must be given the necessary support to perform their duties effectively.
He maintained that Nigeria needs a leader who is present, accountable and willing to confront the country’s challenges directly.
