Suleiman Kum has been named the new Head of the Nigeria National Office of the West African Examinations Council, WAEC.
The 56-year-old administrator takes charge at a time of transition for the council following the exit of Dr Amos Dangut, who completed his three-year tenure on October 1, 2026.
Dangut has now moved to WAEC’s top administrative position as Registrar and Chief Executive Officer.
Kum’s appointment was confirmed on Sunday by the council through its Head of Public Affairs in Nigeria, Moyosola Adesina. His selection had been reported earlier by The PUNCH.
The new WAEC Nigeria boss brings more than two decades of experience within the examination body. He began his career with the council on July 17, 1998, as Assistant Registrar II and has since worked in several departments and locations.
His professional responsibilities have included examination security, test administration, security printing, branch supervision, zonal coordination and general administration.
He was part of efforts that introduced new security and identification systems into WAEC’s operations, including Variable Data Printing and facial-recognition technology for monitoring attendance.
Kum also contributed to the use of computer-based testing for Achievement Tests, reflecting his involvement in the council’s shift towards technology-driven examination processes.
In the course of his career, he served in Awka, Yola, Makurdi, Gusau, Kano, Port Harcourt and Ikeja. His assignments included heading examination security units, managing branches, coordinating zones and overseeing the Security Printing Department.
He later became Director of Administration before taking on the role of Senior Deputy Registrar responsible for Test Administration.
WAEC also highlighted his contribution to the development of its Gusau operations, where he helped establish the office as a Custodial Centre.
A native of Plateau State, Kum holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the National Open University of Nigeria. He is currently pursuing a Master of Education degree in Educational Administration and Planning at NOUN.
WAEC described Kum as an experienced professional with knowledge spanning assessment development, examination management, security procedures and organisational administration.
The council said his years of service have been recognised through various commendations and awards, citing his dedication, integrity and contribution to institutional development.
With his appointment, Kum becomes the latest official to take responsibility for the management of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office.
