Kano Summons Gandu, NDC Faults Oborevwori

The Kano State Censorship Board has invited renowned political musician, Tijjani Gandu, to appear before its officials following allegations that he breached established guidelines governing the production and distribution of musical content.

The development comes amid the board’s renewed efforts to ensure that creative works released within the state comply with its regulatory requirements.

According to Politics Nigeria, the agency instructed the singer to present himself and provide explanations concerning the alleged infraction.

The invitation was disclosed in a statement released on Saturday by the board’s spokesperson, Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman.

The agency explained that the action was connected to its existing policy requiring entertainers, authors and other content creators to submit their materials for examination and clearance before public distribution.

Under the regulation, songs, written compositions, scripts and related creative materials are expected to undergo assessment to determine whether their contents meet the stipulated standards.

The board explained that the screening exercise was designed to prevent the circulation of expressions or messages capable of provoking unrest, threatening public safety or undermining peaceful coexistence.

It maintained that freedom of expression should not be interpreted as permission to disregard legally established requirements.

The agency further declared its intention to administer the regulations impartially, stressing that no individual would receive preferential treatment in the enforcement of the law.

Gandu was consequently advised to cooperate with the authorities by responding to the invitation, while the board cautioned that ignoring the directive could attract additional consequences.

The musician is widely identified with the Kwankwasiyya political movement, which is associated with former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, who is the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Meanwhile, in a separate political development, Delta State’s NDC governorship hopeful for the 2027 election, Chris Iyovwaye, has demanded improved governance, openness in public financial management and deliberate efforts to generate employment opportunities.

He made the appeal while reacting to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s Independence Day address, where the governor encouraged citizens to uphold patriotism, bravery and selflessness.

Iyovwaye argued that residents had endured considerable economic and social difficulties and deserved a government willing to demonstrate its commitment through measurable achievements.

He questioned the administration’s emphasis on personal sacrifice, insisting that genuine commitment to public service should be reflected in government spending and development priorities.

The opposition aspirant urged Oborevwori to provide a comprehensive account of state income and federal allocations received between 2023 and 2026.

He also demanded clarification on the proportion of additional Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) receipts invested in infrastructure and employment-generating initiatives, compared with funds devoted to administrative costs and political obligations.

Additionally, Iyovwaye called for the restoration of commercial operations at Warri, Koko, Sapele and Burutu ports, arguing that their full utilisation could create employment for approximately 50,000 people.

He maintained that meaningful patriotism should be demonstrated through functional public institutions, accessible healthcare, economic expansion and policies capable of improving the welfare of ordinary Deltans.

According to him, the state requires practical development initiatives rather than appeals for sacrifice without corresponding improvements in people’s livelihoods.
