NDC: Tinubu Can Only Win Through Rigging

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has challenged the possibility of President Bola Tinubu securing another term in office through a credible electoral process, insisting that his only route to victory in the 2027 presidential election would be through alleged electoral fraud.

The opposition party also warned that Nigerians would not tolerate any attempt to manipulate the outcome of the forthcoming polls, expressing confidence that citizens were prepared to defend their votes.

The party made its position known while responding to an analysis published by British-based magazine, The Economist, which suggested that Tinubu could retain the presidency despite widespread dissatisfaction with his administration.

The publication, in an article titled, ‘Nigerians Dislike Their President, But May Re-elect Him Anyway,’ examined the political atmosphere surrounding the president’s second-term ambition amid mounting concerns over insecurity, rising living costs and the government’s overall performance.

According to the magazine, Tinubu appeared unusually relaxed about his chances of winning another presidential mandate, notwithstanding the numerous difficulties facing the country.

The Economist described the president’s apparent confidence as unexpected, considering the prevailing security challenges and economic pressures confronting Nigerians.

It further observed that the country continued to experience serious security threats, with armed groups, bandits and insurgents reportedly carrying out kidnappings and killings almost every day.

However, reacting to the publication in an interview with LEADERSHIP, the NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, questioned the reasoning behind its prediction that Tinubu could emerge victorious despite acknowledging his declining popularity.

Director argued that the magazine had failed to adequately explain how the president could overcome the political consequences of widespread public dissatisfaction and still secure re-election.

He maintained that the assessment appeared inconsistent with the economic and security indicators highlighted in the same report.

According to the party spokesman, the publication acknowledged several weaknesses affecting Tinubu’s political standing but failed to establish how those challenges would translate into an electoral advantage for the president.

He suggested that the analysis overlooked important considerations that could influence voters’ decisions during the 2027 general election.

Director further insisted that the figures and circumstances presented by The Economist did not support its projection of a possible second term for the incumbent president.

Speaking on the party’s position, he declared that the NDC could not identify any legitimate electoral route through which Tinubu would secure another mandate.

He argued that any attempt to retain power against the wishes of voters would amount to electoral manipulation, warning that Nigerians were prepared to oppose such developments.

The NDC spokesman said the party remained unconvinced by the suggestion that the president could overcome the prevailing public mood and return to office through a genuine democratic contest.

His comments have added to the growing political debate surrounding Tinubu’s re-election ambition, particularly as opposition figures continue to question the administration’s handling of economic difficulties, insecurity and other national concerns ahead of the 2027 elections.
