2027: PRP Chairman Breaks Silence on Coalition to Challenge Tinubu

The National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has said the opposition coalition involving the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), PRP and other parties is focused on challenging President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

Baba-Ahmed made the disclosure in an interview with Tribune, where he discussed the coalition, the PRP’s preparations for the elections and the possibility of opposition parties working together to present a stronger challenge to the ruling party.

He said the coalition was built around collaboration among opposition parties, adding that all options remained open as discussions continued over how the parties would approach the presidential election.

According to him, the parties would have to negotiate and make sacrifices if they were to achieve meaningful cooperation ahead of the election.

Baba-Ahmed also acknowledged that the existence of presidential candidates on different party platforms could make the process more complicated. He said the coalition was therefore examining the legal and political limitations surrounding the possibility of a common opposition arrangement.

The PRP chairman said his party was already fine-tuning its campaign strategy and preparing its structures for the 2027 elections. He added that the party would soon announce its campaign council, which he said would focus on issues such as poverty, insecurity, corruption, national unity and opportunities for young Nigerians.

He further said the PRP would rely on its political structure, candidates and cooperation with other opposition groups rather than attempting to compete with larger parties solely on financial resources.

Baba-Ahmed also criticised the current administration over insecurity and economic hardship, arguing that the 2027 election would give Nigerians an opportunity to assess the performance of the APC-led government.

The opposition coalition has continued to hold consultations involving several political parties and leaders, with discussions also focusing on whether the various groups can agree on a common presidential candidate or another form of electoral cooperation.
