Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour has pledged to ensure transparency and accountability in public spending if elected governor of Lagos State in 2027.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Rhodes-Vivour said his administration would prioritise improving residents’ living standards rather than treating government as a commercial enterprise.
He criticised alleged irregularities in the state’s budget, claiming that some public projects and purchases had been assigned figures significantly above their actual costs.
As an example, he alleged that a generator worth ₦16 million had been listed at ₦160 million in a budget. He also cited a controversy over the reported cost of an air freshener, questioning the explanation that the figure resulted from a typographical error.
Rhodes-Vivour said his proposed approach to governance would be guided by integrity, responsible spending and the effective use of public funds to address challenges facing Lagos residents.
He also urged political opponents to focus on substantive issues, including traffic congestion and other problems affecting the state, rather than making campaign discussions revolve around language and family background.
On his choice of Babatunde Gbadamosi as running mate, Rhodes-Vivour described him as an experienced and consistent politician whose contribution would support his plans for Lagos.
Rhodes-Vivour contested the 2023 governorship election and finished second behind incumbent Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. He is now seeking the governorship under the ADC ahead of the 2027 election.
The allegations concerning budget costs were made by Rhodes-Vivour during the interview and have not been independently established in this report.
