Mining Pit Collapses in Niger State

A Mining pit collapsed at Bazakwoi in the Adunu community, Paikoro Local Government Area of Niger State, resulting in the death of three people.

Recall that just barely two weeks ago, a mining pit collapsed in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.
Mallam Abdullahi Baba Ara who is the Director-General of Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) disclosed that the incident occured earlier on Thursday, June 13, 2024.

According to the DG, the mining site is an illegal site where local miners were scavenging for gold. Three person’s lost their lives while one person was rescued but injured.

He said, ” The incident occured earlier today, 13th June, 2024. It involved local miners who were said to be illegally mining the gold deposit environment and scavenging for the mineral, thereby resulting in the death of no fewer than about three persons at the scene.”
Earlier, the state Chairman of the Miners Association of Nigeria, Yusuf Shuaibu, told Channels Television that the pit caved in around 10 am, trapping an unconfirmed number of workers.

He added that the association had mobilised a team for on-the-spot assessment of the scene of the incident with support from the government of Niger State.
