Andy Cole has suggested that the lack of a Premier League move for Victor Osimhen may have little to do with the striker’s wage demands or the fee required to sign him.
The former Manchester United attacker believes clubs weigh several other issues when deciding whether to pursue a player, despite Osimhen’s proven record in front of goal.
The Nigeria international has been a reported target for Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea at different points, yet none has completed his signing.
Cole, speaking to GOAL, said Osimhen has the attributes needed to thrive in England and pointed to his consistent scoring record in both Italy and Turkey.
“He does. He scores goals. He scored goals in Italy and he’s scoring goals in Turkey as well,” Cole said.
“But, you know, it depends. There are many different factors in signing a player from a respective country. It’s not all about just the salary or the transfer fee. There could be many different things that go on.
“If he does come to the Premier League, which I think he will be very good at, you never know who he’ll go to.”
Osimhen’s route to becoming one of Europe’s recognised forwards began at Wolfsburg. After limited opportunities in Germany, he spent time with Charleroi in Belgium, where his performances earned him greater attention.
Lille subsequently signed the striker before Napoli secured his services. In Italy, he became central to the club’s successful 2022/23 campaign, helping Napoli claim the Serie A championship.
He finished that season with 31 goals and later continued his impressive output after joining Galatasaray. His record with the Turkish side currently stands at 65 goals from 78 appearances.
The forward’s form has kept speculation about a Premier League switch alive, with Manchester United repeatedly mentioned as a possible destination.
Former United defender Patrice Evra has also publicly identified Osimhen as a striker who could suit the club’s needs.
“I think Osimhen is the best. He’s a perfect example,” Evra told GOAL.
Saha, another former France international, has likewise encouraged United to consider the Nigerian, citing his scoring numbers, experience in the Champions League and trophy-winning spells with Napoli and Galatasaray.
United, however, have opted against pursuing Osimhen so far and have instead recruited Benjamin Sesko to lead their central striking options.
For now, Osimhen remains a Galatasaray player under contract. Any renewed attempt from a Premier League side would therefore require negotiations with the Turkish club.
