Obi: I Won’t Step Down for Atiku in 2027 Presidential Election

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi, has ruled out withdrawing from the 2027 presidential race in favour of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

Obi stated that he had no intention of stepping down for Atiku, insisting that Nigerians were looking for a new direction and that he remained committed to providing that alternative.

The former Anambra State governor spoke while addressing supporters and political stakeholders, amid ongoing discussions over the possibility of a single opposition candidate challenging President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.

The issue has gained attention following calls for some opposition politicians to withdraw from the race in order to avoid splitting votes.

However, Obi maintained that stepping down was not an option for him, stressing that his decision was based on his belief in the political movement he represents and the need for Nigerians to have a credible alternative.

He also dismissed suggestions that his ambition was motivated by personal interest, saying his focus remained on improving the country and creating opportunities for Nigerians.

Obi emerged as the presidential candidate of the NDC ahead of the 2027 election, with former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, serving as his running mate.

Atiku, meanwhile, is the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, after joining forces with other opposition figures ahead of the election.

The former vice-president has continued to defend his decision to contest the presidency despite being one of the older contenders in the race.

The development has intensified discussions among opposition politicians over whether the various parties should unite behind one candidate to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Obi, however, maintained that he would remain in the race, signalling that the 2027 presidential contest could feature several major opposition candidates.

The former governor has continued to campaign on issues including economic reform, good governance, security and improved opportunities for young Nigerians.

His position comes amid renewed efforts by opposition politicians to form a stronger political alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
