Peter Obi Signs 2027 Peace Accord, Urges Peace

There have been mixed reactions from members of the public, particularly social media users, following the decision of former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to join other presidential contenders in signing the national peace accord ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obi, in a statement shared on his official X account on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, explained the importance of the agreement and what it represents in the country’s electoral process.

The former governor stressed that individuals aspiring to be addressed as “His Excellency” must demonstrate excellence not only in their conduct but also in the process through which they emerge as leaders.

According to Obi, the signing of the peace accord was a reaffirmation of his commitment to ensuring that all presidential candidates conduct themselves in a manner befitting the offices they seek to occupy.

He noted that political leaders have a responsibility to promote peace and discourage violence among their supporters, particularly during election periods.

Obi further maintained that violence should have no place in Nigeria’s electoral system, urging political candidates to ensure that their followers equally embrace peaceful conduct throughout the electoral process.

The former governor also called on his supporters to remain calm, resolute and committed to peaceful participation as the country approaches the 2027 presidential election.

He emphasised that the conduct of both candidates and their supporters would play an important role in determining the credibility and atmosphere surrounding the elections.

The statement has since generated several reactions across social media platforms, with many Nigerians expressing support for the call for a peaceful electoral process.

Some users also stressed the need for justice, fairness and equity to guide the 2027 elections, arguing that a credible electoral process must be built on principles that guarantee equal treatment for all candidates and voters.

Others welcomed Obi’s position, noting that political leaders should lead by example and discourage their supporters from engaging in acts capable of causing violence or disrupting the electoral process.

The reactions have continued to generate discussions about the responsibilities of presidential candidates and the need for all political actors to prioritise national interest above personal or partisan ambitions.

As preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum, Obi’s message has further drawn attention to the importance of peaceful political engagement and a credible electoral process.

Below is the statement shared by Peter Obi on his official X account, alongside some of the reactions from members of the public.
