Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu says careful handling of his players has been a major part of Nigeria’s campaign at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
With the tournament potentially requiring the Falcons to play six matches, Madugu believes the team cannot depend on the same set of players throughout the competition. He said maintaining the squad’s energy and performance will require giving players opportunities at the right time.
The coach also stressed the importance of keeping those who have not featured regularly motivated and prepared.
Gift Monday’s patience was highlighted as an example of the attitude expected from players waiting for their chance.
Madugu explained that members of his technical crew regularly communicate with unused players, reminding them to stay prepared because circumstances can change quickly during a tournament.
He said readiness goes beyond physical fitness, noting that players must also remain mentally prepared to contribute whenever they are called upon.
Monday has now added another option to Nigeria’s attack following her performance against Egypt, giving Madugu even more choices ahead of the quarter-final meeting with Cameroon on Sunday.
The Falcons have several attacking players competing for limited positions, including Asisat Oshoala, Uchenna Kanu, Joy Omewa, Esther Okoronkwo, Chinwendu Ihezuo and Folashade Ijamilusi.
Madugu admitted that the quality within the squad has made his job more demanding, particularly when deciding who should start each game.
He described having several capable players as a positive challenge, explaining that the coaching staff considers different factors before settling on the final lineup.
According to the coach, discussions among the technical team can be extensive because each player brings different qualities and can offer something valuable to the team.
As Nigeria moves into the knockout phase, Madugu will be hoping his approach to squad management helps the Falcons remain fresh and competitive as they continue their bid to retain the WAFCON title.
