Ronaldo’s Portugal Seal Confidence Boosting Win Over Nigeria

Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed confidence in Portugal’s readiness for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after the European side secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Nigeria’s Super Eagles in their final pre-tournament friendly in Leiria on Wednesday.

Following the match at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa, the Portuguese skipper shared a message on Instagram, declaring that preparations had been completed and the team’s attention was now firmly fixed on the World Cup.

Portugal did not have everything their own way during the encounter. Pedro Neto broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute after Ronaldo failed to convert a clear opportunity. Nigeria responded before the interval, with Akor Adams finding the net after being played through by Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. Francisco Conceição restored Portugal’s advantage in the second half, scoring what proved to be the decisive goal and handing Roberto Martinez’s men a morale-boosting win.

The meeting marked Portugal’s second pre-World Cup clash with Nigeria, having also defeated the Super Eagles 4-0 in a friendly ahead of the 2022 tournament.

Although Nigeria ended up on the losing side, they produced an encouraging display. Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye impressed with several crucial saves, while defenders Semi Ajayi and Calvin Bassey delivered composed performances at the back.

Adams continued his fine form with a well-executed equaliser before making way late on. Midfielder Tochukwu Nnadi showcased his energy and composure, while substitutes Frank Onyeka and Raphael Onyedika brought added balance after coming on. Alex Iwobi, who made his 100th appearance for the national team, had a relatively quiet outing, and Moses Simon struggled to influence the game before being withdrawn.

The result also represented Eric Chelle’s first defeat in normal time as Nigeria coach, bringing an end to his impressive 25-match streak without a loss, which consisted of 16 victories and nine draws.

Portugal will begin their World Cup campaign in Group K, where they are scheduled to face the Democratic Republic of Congo, Colombia and Uzbekistan.
