Hamstring Injury Puts Iwobi’s Return in Doubt

Super Eagles and Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi is now in a tight recovery battle to regain full fitness in time for Nigeria’s Unity Cup scheduled for later this month after giving an injury update on the thigh muscle problem he picked up during the Premier League match against Brentford on April 18.

The Nigeria international has not featured in Fulham’s last three league fixtures since the incident, which happened just before half-time when he suddenly pulled up while chasing a loose ball without any contact from an opponent. He was immediately substituted and walked straight to the dressing room.

With the tournament set to take place in London from May 26 to May 30, his participation is now uncertain.

Speaking on the Alexander Yaa Digg podcast, Iwobi shared that he has been trying to remain mobile during recovery. He explained that he has been taking light walks around his area and visiting nearby shops to keep his circulation active and prevent stiffness while staying away from full training.

He added that he is currently dealing with a hamstring issue, noting that he is continuing gentle movement and counting his daily steps while waiting for further medical assessment. He expressed gratitude for the messages and support he has received from fans and well-wishers.

According to him, the seriousness of the injury is still unclear until he undergoes a scan soon, although he is encouraged that he can still walk, even if slightly uncomfortable, and is hoping for a quick return.

The 29-year-old also admitted that being sidelined has been mentally draining, pointing out that he rarely suffers injuries and finds it frustrating to be limited in movement. However, he acknowledged that setbacks are part of football and life in general.

Iwobi has been an important figure for Fulham this season, featuring in 27 league matches, scoring four times, providing three assists, and accumulating 2,279 minutes on the pitch.
