As technology continues to advance at a rapid pace, Web3 experts, artists and innovation enthusiasts converged in Lagos to examine post-capitalist ideas and explore emerging opportunities within the blockchain space, with particular focus on Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) and their regulation.
The gathering, organised by Ola and Co. Inc., was themed “Post-Capitalist Desire” and titled Ileya. It brought together creatives, technologists and thought leaders seeking to reimagine community building and value creation beyond traditional capitalist frameworks. The organisers said the event was designed to spark conversations around alternative systems enabled by decentralised technologies.
Convener of Ileya, Web3 developer and business transformation expert, Mr Obafemi Odejayi, explained that the inspiration behind the event was closely tied to its name. According to him, “Ileya” symbolises a call to return home with ideas acquired from the diaspora, books and global exposure, and to adapt them in ways that are practical, inclusive and impactful for local communities.
Odejayi noted that the event showcased both physical and digital art, including tangible art pieces brought from the diaspora as well as NFTs and digital works created by artists based in Lagos and abroad. He described Ileya as a bridge connecting global innovation with local realities, ensuring that cutting-edge ideas are not detached from everyday social and cultural contexts.
Expanding on the theme, Odejayi argued that capitalism has become increasingly dominant and extractive across global systems, creating the need to explore alternative models of organisation and value exchange. He said Web3 offers tools that can help communities experiment with decentralised, people-driven solutions rather than profit-focused structures.
Beyond financial applications, Odejayi highlighted the potential of blockchain technology in addressing social and developmental challenges. He explained that decentralised systems could be applied to areas such as community voting, sanitation projects, skills development programmes and the management of shared community centres, all without reliance on traditional intermediaries. According to him, the transparency inherent in blockchain technology promotes accountability by clearly showing participation, decision-making processes and outcomes.
He added that the event was not targeted at a narrow demographic but rather at individuals seeking meaningful change. “It is for people who want to rethink democracy and rediscover the idea of collective power,” he said, noting that Web3 provides a platform for people to organise, collaborate and drive impact collectively.
Artist Chinedu Offor, who also spoke at the event, stressed the role of education in driving long-term societal transformation. He observed that frustration, inequality and lack of opportunity often push people toward destructive behaviours, but education equips individuals with the tools needed to form strong networks, think critically and pursue sustainable futures. According to him, creative expression and knowledge-sharing are essential in shaping more conscious and resilient communities.
One of the exhibitors at Ileya 2025, artist Ayomide Grey, explained that his works explore themes such as economic pressure, identity and cross-cultural experiences. He said artists have a responsibility to mirror society by highlighting its struggles and contradictions, making complex issues more visible and accessible to the public through art.
A participant at the event, Mrs Yetunde Odejayi, Chief Executive Officer of Folahan Fabrics, described Ileya as a space for mental and creative liberation. She said the discussions and exhibitions encouraged participants to rethink dependence on rigid systems and embrace self-reliance, collaboration and shared responsibility in shaping their personal and collective futures.
Overall, Ileya served as a platform for dialogue, creativity and experimentation, offering fresh perspectives on how Web3 and blockchain technologies can be harnessed not just for innovation, but for building more inclusive, transparent and community-centred systems in Nigeria and beyond.
