Nigeria is set to welcome the first-ever African Boxing Congress and Boxing Gala Night on Sunday, December 28, 2025, in Lagos. The event will see participation from delegates representing more than 20 national federations affiliated with the sport from across the continent.

The Nigeria Boxing Federation, led by Hon. Wale Edun, successfully won the rights to host this historic gathering from African Boxing, the continent’s boxing authority and a branch of World Boxing, which oversees Olympic-style boxing globally.

In correspondence with the NBF, African Boxing described Nigeria as “a strategic nation with the capacity to lead a holistic advancement of the squared ropes sports in the continent.” The letter further confirmed the appointment of NBF Vice President Hon. Omonlei Imadu to the African Boxing Working Committee, assigning him the additional role of Head of Organisation for the upcoming Congress.

Commenting on the appointment, Imadu shared his enthusiasm about the opportunity.

“As a federation, we would do all in our power to host a successful event in December. As the head of the organisation, I am particularly excited at the prospect of having the congress in Nigeria because it’s one that will position both the NBF and our nation as a central point for the highest boxing decision-making body on the continent,” Imadu said.

Securing the hosting rights gives Nigeria a strategic advantage to become the designated host for the African boxing qualifiers for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Additionally, the event is expected to enhance the Nigeria Boxing Federation’s standing, enabling it to attract numerous developmental initiatives aimed at improving Olympic-style boxing in the country through African Boxing. The continental governing body has also revealed plans to establish its headquarters in Lagos, further cementing Nigeria’s role in African boxing administration.
