Aminat Alabi has made history as the first Lagos-born athlete to win the Lagos Women Run, claiming victory at the 10th edition of the 10km marathon held last weekend. She crossed the finish line in 39 minutes, 25.80 seconds, securing a cash prize of N2 million. Vivian Obadiah finished in second place with a time of 39:55.12 and earned N1.5 million, while Elizabeth Nuhu took third in 40:39.83, winning N1 million. The race began at Tafawa Balewa Square and concluded at Mobolaji Johnson Sports Arena, Onikan.

Lagos State Sports Commission’s Director General, Lekan Fatodu, celebrated Alabi’s achievement, saying it highlights the abundance of talent across the state.

“For a Lagosian to win a marathon, it’s a manifestation of the fact that every corner of the state is blessed with talents and provided with opportunities. Through our amiable Governor, we will continue to use the platform to attract stars and potential talents to bring them to the fore and allow them to sharpen their skills,” he said.

“Lagos is actually at the centre of many things that have to do with new innovations and development that’s been manifested consistently in sports and other areas of human endeavours.”

Fatodu also acknowledged the organizers for their commitment to nurturing athletes, promoting community engagement, and encouraging the growth of sports.

“The 10th edition of Lagos Women Run is a decade of consistency, commitment, impact, and a remarkable journey. It’s a decade of building community cohesion, promoting consistent opportunities in sports, in terms of personal development, wellness and opportunity for economic development and leadership.”

Alabi is already looking forward to upcoming races, determined to continue her strong performances.

“With the training l have been doing, l just believe that l will be among the first three. I started training early this year and l promised myself to end up well in this year’s edition. I just have to train very well because of those that are coming from the northern part are very strong, but l said I want to be the first Lagos marathon runner that would set a record and bring the title to Lagos,” she said.

Tayo Popoola, coordinator of Lagos Women Run, explained that the event began as a small initiative to create a platform for women to connect through running. Over time, it has grown into a key preparatory event for elite athletes, giving them a chance to refine their skills ahead of larger competitions while helping to boost the profile of road racing in Nigeria.
