Fubara vows Ring Road completion

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to completing the 62.65-kilometre Port Harcourt Ring Road Project, despite earlier setbacks caused by funding challenges.

The governor gave this assurance during an on-site inspection of the project, where he met with contractors from Julius Berger Nigeria Plc and confirmed that work had officially resumed. Fubara described the road as one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in the history of Rivers State, emphasizing its significance in easing traffic congestion, improving connectivity, and driving economic growth across the region.

Addressing journalists during the inspection, Fubara expressed confidence in Julius Berger’s capacity to deliver on schedule. He noted that the contractor had already remobilized equipment and personnel to various construction sections following renewed discussions with the state government.

“Julius Berger has always been a dependable partner in the infrastructural development of Rivers State,” the governor stated. “After several meetings, they gave us their word to return to site even before all discussions were finalized. I am here today to confirm that they have fulfilled that commitment. Let me assure the good people of Rivers State that, by the special grace of God, this project will be completed.”

Fubara acknowledged that work had slowed in the past due to financial constraints but affirmed that his administration was determined to overcome the hurdles and deliver the project as promised. He stressed that his government remains focused on completing all critical infrastructure that would enhance the quality of life for residents and support sustainable development.

Providing updates on construction progress, Site Engineer, Mike Andrae, confirmed that Julius Berger has resumed major civil works across several sections of the project. “Currently, we are focusing on completing bridge works on Flyovers 1 and 3, after which asphalting will begin. On Flyover 5, only asphalting remains,” he said.

Andrae explained that while the original contract timeline targeted mid-2026 for completion, the company now expects to deliver the project by December 2026, accounting for delays experienced earlier in the year.

Spanning approximately 62.65 kilometres, the Port Harcourt Ring Road Project is designed as a dual carriageway connecting six local government areas  Port Harcourt City, Obio-Akpor, Ikwerre, Etche, Eleme, and Ogu-Bolo. The infrastructure includes six flyovers and a river-crossing bridge, enhancing mobility and reducing travel time between industrial, commercial, and residential hubs.

Awarded in July 2023 with a 36-month completion timeline, the Ring Road project aims to address Port Harcourt’s longstanding traffic challenges by creating a circular route linking major suburbs and business districts. It is also expected to open new corridors for investment, boost intra-city commerce, and expand the urban landscape of Rivers State.

Governor Fubara reaffirmed that infrastructure remains a central focus of his administration’s development agenda. He assured residents that the government would continue prioritizing projects that promote connectivity, foster economic opportunities, and improve access to essential services.

“The Port Harcourt Ring Road is not just a road project,” Fubara stated, “it is a legacy of progress  one that will transform our city, strengthen our economy, and improve the daily lives of our people.”
